English as Foreign Language Capacity-Building Mission to Vietnam: February 29 – March 5, 2016

  • CBIE-BCEI
  • Press Release

The Canadian Bureau for International Education will lead a delegation of 12 Canadian post-secondary institutions to Vietnam with the objective of exploring EFL capacity-building opportunities in Vietnam. More specifically, the group seeks to learn about current and future plans of the Vietnamese government and higher education institutions with respect to increasing the knowledge and use of the English language across Vietnam. Canada’s experience and involvement in EFL training in Vietnam has been relatively limited compared to other countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom. This delegation will explore how Canadian institutions might most effectively collaborate together and offer a uniquely-positioned Canadian option to Vietnamese partners seeking to strengthen their capacities to design and deliver EFL programming in Vietnam.

Canada is world-renowned as a leader in language training. The Canadian delegation includes post-secondary institutional representatives from coast to coast and with particular expertise in the development and implementation of English as a Second/Foreign Language programming in Canada and across the globe. The institutions represented on this delegation are:

  • Culture Works
  • Dalhousie University
  • Norquest College
  • Queen’s University
  • Renison University College, University of Waterloo
  • Saint Mary’s University
  • Seneca College
  • Thompson Rivers University
  • University of Alberta
  • University of Northern British Columbia
  • University of Prince Edward Island
  • Western University

Throughout the week the delegation will travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Tra Vinh to meet with Vietnamese government officials at the national and municipal levels; universities and colleges; Canadian government officials; a regional intergovernmental organization; and, the Canadian International School System. The delegation will also participate in and present at the International Education Integration Conference that is being organized by the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges (AVUC).

CBIE and AVUC signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2015 that expressed intent to promote education collaboration between Canada and Vietnam in a range of areas, including English as a Foreign Language.
