Ottawa, November 24, 2015: Today, CBIE released its annual global report on the state of international education in Canada – A World of Learning: Canada’s Performance and Potential in International Education – at its 49th Annual Conference.

The report provides a range of statistics and in-depth analysis. It features a wealth of data from a survey of international students based on over 4,000 responses from a cross-Canada sample of 35 of CBIE’s member institutions.

“International education is critical to the future of Canada and Canadians,” said Karen McBride, President and CEO of CBIE. “We are pleased to provide policymakers, thought leaders and innovators in education, government and business with a valuable resource to advance our collective understanding and lend further impetus to our initiatives.”

Highlights include:

  • A country’s immigration policy affects the attractiveness of it as a study destination
  • It is estimated that in 2014 the number of internationally mobile students worldwide surpassed the 5 million mark
  • In 2014 there were 336,497 international students in Canada, an 83% increase over the last decade and an 10% increase over the previous year
  • Students from China make up one third of the international student population (33%), an increase of 16% over the previous year
  • Nigeria and Vietnam are the fastest growing countries for international students in Canada
  • Prince Edward Island has had the highest growth rate of international students since 2008
  • Ontario has the highest share of international students at 43% in 2014
  • Over 95% of students would recommend Canada as a study destination
