On May 26, two African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) scholars participated in the end-of-year ceremony to mark the completion of their studies at l’École nationale d’administration publique (ENAP) in Quebec City. Mr. El Hadji Babacar Samb and Ms. Cécile-Eve Diedhiou, both from Senegal, are part of the first pilot cohort of four ALT scholars who arrived in Canada in September 2015 to begin their Master of Public Administration programs.
The ALT Scholarship Program commemorates the late Nelson Mandela’s commitment to social justice and equity. It supports young African professionals to become leaders in public policy and administration by completing a Master’s degree in public administration, public policy or public finance at a Canadian university.
“Living and studying in Canada has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have developed both personally and intellectually. I’ve discovered myself, I’ve faced challenges and my motivation has just kept growing.” Babacar Samb
As part of their ALT scholarship, both Babacar and Cécile completed four-month internships.
“During my internship with the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans, I was able to apply the theories and approaches learned in Canada, as well as my experience in fisheries administration in Senegal. It was an extremely enriching experience for me professionally. I’m proud to say that I think I left my mark on my internship project.” Cécile-Eve Diedhiou
Babacar and Cécile are finalizing the reports from their internships, the final requirements for graduation. They will return to Senegal in July. Crossroads International, where Babacar did his internship, has offered him a position as Country Representative in Senegal. Cécile is looking forward to applying her new knowledge in a career in public administration.
“The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) is very excited to have the first “African Leaders of Tomorrow” graduates. With the expertise acquired from Canada’s world-class universities, Babacar and Cécile are able to contribute to development in Senegal and become “African Leaders of Tomorrow!” Larissa Bezo, Vice President, Corporate Relations and Operations
The ALT Scholarship Program is funded by the government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada and by the MasterCard Foundation. It is managed by CBIE in partnership with the Institute of Public Administration of Canada and in collaboration with the African Association of Public Administration and Management and the Canadian Association of Programs in Public Administration.
