Last year saw several changes in immigration policy and practice affecting international students. In this webinar, our panel will review the 5 biggest highlights of 2016, and each discuss one prediction for changes on the horizon for 2017. Upon completion of this webinar participants should be able to:
- Understand the major impacts of key Canadian immigration changes for both international students and institutions in 2016;
- Get connected to people and online resources to better understand the details of specific immigration changes and continue the conversation with peers;
- Consider how to prepare their institution and/or advising practice for potential upcoming changes.
About the Presenters
Lisa Brunner, RCIC
Lisa Brunner is an International Student Advisor (RCIC) at the University of British Columbia. Besides teaching CPD with UBC Continuing Studies, she has worked on a variety of immigration-related research, curriculum design, and teaching projects with Bilkent University (Ankara), the Cultural Orientation Resource Center at the Center for Applied Linguistics (Washington DC), Immigrant Services Society of BC, and Simon Fraser University. She is also a frequent presenter on RCIC-related issues at CBIE conferences. Lisa has an MA in geography focusing on refugee settlement in Canada and is currently pursuing a PhD in Educational Studies.
Natasha Clark, RCIC
Natasha Clark works as an International Student Advisor at Memorial University. As a Regulated Immigration Consultant (RCIC), Natasha provides immigration advising to new and current international students. Natasha has been working in the field of international education since 2005 and sits on the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) Immigration Advisory Committee. Natasha holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University and a Masters of Arts in Immigration and Settlement Studies from Ryerson University.
Patrick Sullivan, RCIC
Patrick is an experienced international education and immigration professional with over 10 years of experience in international development and education program support. In addition to being a RCIC and holding an MA in Immigration and Settlement Studies, he is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Alberta, where he is researching international students’ labour market outcomes. Currently, as NAIT’s Manager, International Programs & Services, Patrick works to develop programs and services related to international students’ transition and immigration compliance needs. In this role, he acts as a leader and resource in the interpretation of immigration regulations and in the advancement of Internationalization.
