CBIE is taking a creative approach to our Regional Meetings this year and hosting a Pan-Canadian Virtual Symposium that explores timely themes in international education that are important to our IE community from coast to coast to coast.
Join us each day from Monday, June 13th to Friday, June 17th, to hear from panels of experts bringing their insight to today’s biggest challenges and opportunities within the international education sector. In addition to our panel discussions, jump into our virtual event space to connect with members of the community and attend our networking events.
French simultaneous interpretation will be offered for each session.

Member Rate: $65 per person
Non-Member rate: $95 per person
*A discount of 25% will be applied to groups of 10 or more from the same institution.
For each registration, a donation of $5 will be made to the agricultural project of Carbone boréal to reforest portions of agricultural wasteland impossible to cultivate.

Join us for a forward-looking conversation on rethinking and shaping the futures of international education. There are multiple possible futures for internationalization and international education. Guided by values of social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion and sustainability, which futures should we choose? Moreover, how do we take action to implement the kind of transformational change that we wish to see in international education? Furthermore, how will we measure and make explicit the real-world impact of these aspirational future trajectories?

The Student Voice: National Results from the 2021 CBIE International Student Survey
With over 67 institutions participating from across the country and over 40,000 international student responses, the 2021 International Student Survey offers a comprehensive first-hand perspective on the international student experience in Canada, from pre-arrival planning through study and post-graduation. In addition to the longitudinal data that has been collected since 2012, this most recent iteration of the survey provides valuable insight into the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on students as they experienced arriving in Canada, studying online and in their search for work opportunities. The survey also has been revised to understand in a meaningful way the perceptions of safety and inclusion that students have while in our country. Join us as we unpack the data that was collected in the fall of 2021.

Join fellow symposium attendees and connect with CBIE and members of its Board of Directors at this networking event. In a small group format, attendees will join regionally-based discussions to meet local colleagues and discuss important topics in international education.

Bridging the Gap between the Campus and Community
Canada values the diversity of knowledge, skills and experiences of international students and views their cultural, linguistic, and professional skills as key competencies, important to our country’s future prosperity. In this panel, we hope to explore how best to sustainably support and include our international students within Canadian communities, in particular, considering:
- Opportunities and modalities for our institutions to collaborate with community service organizations and civil society organizations to enhance access to wraparound supports for international students;
- Effective approaches that can be implemented within smaller communities to create “safe and welcoming spaces” to attract and retain international students;
- How to enhance engagement with the business community to ensure that international students are connected with appropriate and meaningful employment opportunities during their studies and post-graduation; and
- What is needed to strengthen Canada’s capacity to retain international students to meet our human capital and global engagement challenges.

Creating Impactful Learning Opportunities with Virtual Exchange
The pandemic accelerated the adoption of virtual learning both as a teaching tool and as a way to build accessibility into international education. Virtual exchange models such as COIL have demonstrated ‘proof of concept’ for the development of global competencies in the absence of physical mobility. In this panel discussion we’ll explore:
- How to purposefully embed models of virtual collaboration as part of the curriculum and in place of mobility within our institutions;
- What frameworks need to be established to more permanently incorporate these virtual opportunities into our classrooms;
- Ways to connect global learners to create even more impactful learning experiences; and
- What drives learners to participate and how we further reinforce the value and importance of these experiences.

IRCC Immigration Update Session
In this session, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will present information and updates pertaining to the International Student Program (ISP) and related programs and processes (e.g. PGWP) as they have been impacted by the evolving status of immigration policy and processes in Canada. Presenters will answer questions that have been submitted and curated by CBIE’s community, as well as general thematic questions from participants. The session will be moderated by CBIE’s Immigration Advisory Committee (IAC).
