Ottawa, August 21, 2018 – A growing number of international students intend to apply for permanent residence in Canada after their studies. This is a key finding of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) International Student Survey which saw its response rate triple this year.

“As the national voice advancing Canadian international education, we are uniquely placed to provide this comprehensive look at international students in Canada,” said Larissa Bezo, Interim President and CEO, Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). “We appreciate our members’ high level of commitment to this survey which identifies key trends in the sector to watch and address.”

Sixty percent of students surveyed indicated an intention to seek permanent residence in Canada. Other highlights include a growing concern over housing costs, insights on students with dependents, and experiences with Indigenous identity and ways of knowing.

The top three reasons for choosing Canada as a study destination remain the quality of the Canadian education system, Canada’s reputation as a tolerant, non-discriminatory society, and Canada’s reputation as a safe country. Additionally, a majority of respondents cited the opportunity to work during and after their studies as a key driver for deciding to study in Canada.

As the national voice advancing Canadian international education, the Canadian Bureau for International Education has been studying and communicating the experiences of international students in Canada since 1988. CBIE’s pan-Canadian membership comprises 150 colleges, institutes, cégeps, universities, school boards and language schools.
