Ensuring internationalization is an integral part of an institution’s teaching, research and outreach missions is an imperative for the relevance of higher education in our interconnected world. Robust internationalization strategies which focus on a global perspective in the classroom, international research collaboration, mobility, and other types of engagement, result in measurable quantitative and qualitative benefits. And when underpinned by robust international partnerships, both institutions’ internationalization goals and objectives are served.
Through a series of webinars, the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) will offer insight into the strategic process for developing an institutional framework for internationalization including:
- Mapping the Stakeholder Landscape
- Funding for Internationalization
- Management, Governance and Administration of internationalization
- An introduction to internationalization of the curriculum
- Internationalization at Home
- Internationalization Abroad
This introductory webinar will be followed in August by 3-5 additional webinar sessions in which senior administrators from Canadian higher education institutions share their experience and lessons learned in leading the development of effective internationalization strategic plans.

Presenters
Karen McBride, President and CEO, CBIE
Since joining the Canadian Bureau for International Education in 2009, Ms. McBride has strengthened CBIE’s role as both a catalyst for broader and deeper relationships between Canada’s education institutions and international partners and as a platform for ensuring the continued high quality of Canada’s international education efforts. She writes and speaks frequently on what she calls “Canada’s Global Engagement Challenge” in an effort to increase the number of – and support for – Canadian students who pursue education experiences abroad.
Ms. McBride received her MA in International Affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University and her Honours BA in History and French from the University of Western Ontario, now Western University.
In recognition of her dedication to international education in Canada, in June 2012, Ms. McBride was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and she also received the prestigious 2012 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award.
Sonja Knutson, Director – Internationalization Office, Memorial University
Sonja Knutson is the Director of the International Centre and Special Advisor to the President on International Affairs at Memorial University of Newfoundland. As such, she develops and coordinates the deepening of partnerships with institutions and organizations within Canada and around the world. Sonja has an M. Ed. in post-secondary education (Memorial University) and B.Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language (Concordia University). She has been working in International Education for 20 years and is currently responsible for leading, partnering and supporting internationalization initiatives and strategic planning at Memorial. Sonja has served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, and is currently serving as committee chair with the NAFSA International Education Leadership Knowledge Community.
