The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) applauds NAFSA: Association of International Educators, our sister association, for developing International Education Professional Competencies for the international education sector.
“The Competencies have been thoughtfully crafted and will serve as a key resource in developing the professions within our sector, which is rapidly expanding in scope and scale,” said Karen McBride, President and CEO of CBIE.
The Competencies are organized into four key professional practice areas – Comprehensive Internationalization, Education Abroad, International Enrollment Management, and International Student and Scholar Services – and are intended to define the professional knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of international education professionals working in the United States.
While developed from the US perspective, the Competencies are clearly applicable in other contexts. CBIE will be looking closely at NAFSA’s framework as we refine our Professional Recognition Portfolio Program. The Portfolio Program, currently in development, is a competency-based registry for international education professionals that will enable individuals to track – and plan – their personal career trajectory. It will also enhance recognition of the international education field within the academic community, as well as with business and government.
