IE-Pro: Areas of Practice and Operations

Training Overview

This level will lead participants through concepts and skills that form the core services in international education. Participants will build an understanding of how the critical service and program areas of international education interlock and advance comprehensive internationalization throughout the institution.

Learning Objectives

Examining and understanding the strategic benefits of international education for the institution.
Identifying ethical standards and best practices in specific service areas of international education.
Developing a skill set to address specific challenges or opportunities by understanding key components in the day-to-day operations of the international office.

Intended Audience

This course will expose participants to key facts of internationalization such as partnership development, student recruitment, student mobility, risk management, faculty engagement, and internationalization of the curriculum. This course is open to practitioners who have responsibilities pertaining to student recruitment, international student services, study abroad support services and/or areas of internationalization on campus.

Module Overview

Module 1 Comprehensive Internationalization	In this module participants will expand knowledge gained in Level 1 and dive deeper into key considerations of comprehensive internationalization. Participants will begin to explore the strategic benefits of IE for the institution.
Module 2 IE Areas of Practice	In this module learners will expand knowledge gained in Level 1 by further exploring areas of practice within international education, including related ethical standards of practice. Participants will also be introduced to Communities of Practice as a concept, and the benefit of creating and/or participating in CoPs within or across institutions.
Module 3 Day-to-Day Operations of an International Office	In this module learners will explore key components in the day-to-day operations of an international office, including considerations in centralized vs decentralized structures. Resource allocations will be explored, including an introduction to understanding what influences decision makers.
Module 4 Summary and Final Project	In this module, participants will be invited to reflect on their learning as well as present their final projects for feedback from peers and instructors.

IE-Pro: Foundations of International Education

Course Overview

This training introduces concepts and definitions in international education and explores different underlying rationales for internationalizing higher education. An overview of key global, national and regional trends and challenges and how political, social, and economic forces influence international education is also discussed. Additionally, this course outlines key areas in the international student cycle and allows participants to reflect on the most important aspects of internationalization within their respective institutions. Participants will be exposed to the fundamentals of intercultural learning throughout the course and will reflect on ethical practices in their work and the sector.

Learning Outcomes

Understand key concepts and definitions in international education and evaluate how global, national, and regional influences interact within their own institution.
Recognize the context and dynamics that affect internationalization efforts at their institution.
Understand the importance of intercultural competence and ethical practice within the international education sector.
Develop an awareness of one’s cultural values and begin to see oneself through this lens.

Participate Profile

This course is designed to provide foundational knowledge of international education policy and practice. Participants of this course should attend if they are new to the field or have limited prior knowledge of the sector but a desire to learn. This course is open to practitioners who have responsibilities pertaining to areas of internationalization on campus.

Learning Modules

Module 1 Introduction	In this module learners will be introduced to the IEPP and each other, along with key concepts and aspects of international education. Participants will also explore personal, cultural, and EDI contexts and considerations within IE.
Module 2 Mapping the Institutional Landscape	Planning effectively for high-quality, relevant, and sustainable internationalization requires developing a clear understanding of the pillars of internationalization – mobility, partnerships, and curriculum. This module will allow participants to reflect on the most important aspects that are the focus at their respective institutions.
Module 3 Regional, National, and Global Contexts	This module defines internationalization and begins to explore different underlying rationales for internationalization within higher education. An overview of key global, regional and national trends and issues in higher education and how internationalization is influenced by political, social and economic forces is also discussed.
Module 4 Summary and Final Project	In this module, participants will be invited to reflect on their learning as well as present their project for feedback from peers and instructors.
