The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on their election win.
International education is central to Canada’s economic growth, workforce development, innovation, and international leadership. As the global landscape shifts and domestic challenges persist, preserving Canada’s reputation as a destination of choice for top global talent is more important than ever.
In recent years, Canada’s international education sector has been tested. Policy shifts, processing challenges, and reputational impacts have placed new pressures on students, institutions, communities, and industries across the country. At this critical juncture, we must now work together to rebuild trust, modernize systems, and strategically position international education as a cornerstone of Canada’s prosperity and resilience.
CBIE stands ready to partner with the new government to:
- Establish a Pan-Canadian International Education Council — to convene sector leaders and guide national efforts toward a strategic, responsible, and sustainable approach to international education that advances Canada’s workforce, research, innovation, and prosperity objectives.
- Leverage Canada’s international education networks to strengthen global partnerships — by acknowledging in policy and programmatic terms that people-to-people connections fostered through decades of student mobility, research collaboration, and alumni engagement are a critical diplomatic and economic asset for Canada’s global engagement.
- Strengthen Canada’s reputation as a destination of choice — by working collaboratively with the sector to rebuild trust and send a strong, clear message that Canada values and welcomes international students and researchers and remains committed to delivering a world-class educational experience.
We look forward to working collaboratively with government, institutions, communities, and industry leaders to realize a bold, renewed vision for Canada’s role in the global knowledge economy.
Together, we can seize this moment — for Canada’s future.
