SUMMARY:COIL Virtual Exchange -Canadian Case Studies Showcase
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text]The session seeks to provide a space for knowledge sharing via showcasing four (4) studies of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects from 4 different Canadian institutions in both Western and Eastern Canada. Presenters are faculty members and internationalization officers who have conducted a COIL project in the last few years; best case practices\, highlights\, and tips will be shared. \nThe presentation also aims to showcase COIL-VE as not a lesser form of mobility\, but rather\, a supplementary mode to mobility that is effective in widening access and providing choices for Canadian students – particularly those who have traditionally been unable to go on physical mobility. This perspective will give insight to participants and their respective institutions in seeing COIL-VE as a sustainable and inclusive tool that can be a staple in the suite of learning abroad programs available. Through examples of projects\, participants will learn how to articulate the merits of COIL projects and VE programs as more than mere temporary responses to the pandemic\, and formulate the long-term benefits of this cost-effective\, accessible\, and community-building learning format. \nFaculty members\, internationalization officers\, and senior administrators are welcome to join in on this session. \nThis session is led by the co-chairs of the Virtual Education Abroad Beyond the Pandemic subgroup of the CBIE Education Abroad Professional Learning Community. \nLearning Objectives \n\nProvide an overview of COIL and its importance to education abroad programming\nTo learn how to start and implement COIL at Canadian institutions\nTo learn from faculty members on how COIL impacted their teaching and learning\nTo learn how COIL can contribute to internationalization-at-home(IaH)\, especially for intercultural communication development among faculty and students\n\nWebinar Agenda \n\n\n\n1:00 pm – 1:05 pm\nIntroduction\n\n\n1:05 pm – 1:15 pm\nTopic 1: Four institution profiles. This provides new opportunities to leverage different recruitment mechanisms.\nRisks abound | Intensifying competition\, rapidly shifting markets and changing international dynamics present risks for universities globally.\nOptimism remains | University leaders remain confident in their own strengths and in the underlying demand for international education.\n\nThe webinar will highlight the significant responsibilities international education leaders bear in their institutions and the weight of expectations that come with such a prominent portfolio. \nLearning Objectives\n\nDifferentiate between the varying elements of the internationalization agenda of universities across universities in Canada\, Australia and the UK.\nUnderstand the diverse and competing priorities of senior international education leaders.\nExplore areas of increased and decreased investment by universities in the landscape of student recruitment.\nAccess insights into the medium to long-term challenges\, opportunities and risks facing universities with internationalization ambitions.\n\nWebinar Agenda\n\n\n\n1:30 – 1:35\nWelcome and introduction (CBIE)\n\n\n1:35 – 2:05\nReport results presentation\n\n\n2:05 – 2:25\nQ&A and discussion\n\n\n2:25 – 2:30\nConcluding remarks (CBIE)\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nPresenters\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row class= »facilitator-row »][vc_column width= »1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width= »3/4″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width= »2/3″][vc_column_text] \nJon Chew\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Global Head of Insights and Analytics[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width= »1/3″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Jon Chew is the Global Head of Insights and Analytics at Navitas and is one of Australia’s foremost experts in international education market trends. SUMMARY:I’m Fine. It’s Fine. Everything is Fine… Except it’s Not. Trauma-Informed Leadership
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row text_align= »center »][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nRegistration Deadline: March 31\, 2023\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nOVERVIEW\n“All Canadians avoid non-essential travel outside the country until further notice. Canadian travellers return to Canada via commercial means while they remain available.” Prime Minister Trudeau\, March 16\, 2020 \nFor many of us working in international education at the time\, we were dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic for weeks or even months before this announcement by the Prime Minister. We were used to managing international risks – but this virus was different from anything anyone had experienced. Even the best-laid emergency plans did not account for a global grounding of the air industry or directives not to leave home. Comforting international students who were worried about loved ones back home\, navigating ever-closing pathways for students to fly home\, working with risk management departments\, participating on ad hoc institutional response teams and managing our own safety and families’ safety at the beginning of the pandemic shook all of our personal and professional foundations. \nNearly three years later\, we have moved from a ‘response’ to a ‘recovery’ phase of this emergency and adjusted and adapted in ways we never dreamed possible prior to the pandemic. Virtual classrooms\, virtual international internships and study abroad\, virtual webinars\, and rapid changes and flexibility to study permits changed us – and our industry. This past September marked the first time many schools\, universities and colleges went back to a ‘normal’ in-person semester. Yet\, things are not ‘normal’ and are not the same as they were. People are more tired\, more scared\, more vigilant\, more short-tempered\, more anxious\, more explosive\, more emotional\, more withdrawn than before – and sometimes all in the same day. These are all trauma responses. \nTrauma is a lasting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person’s sense of safety\, sense of self\, and ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships. Long after the traumatic event occurs\, people with trauma can often feel shame\, helplessness\, powerlessness and intense fear. (CAMH) \nHow can leaders in international education better understand how trauma affects their workplace and themselves? What strategies can leaders incorporate for greater self-regulation? How can leaders hold space for others who have experienced trauma – from the teams they lead to their co-workers\, larger institutions\, students and partners? This interactive webinar will take a deeper dive into this topic and also bring together people to share their own discoveries and best practices on their awareness and healing journeys. The workshop is expertly tailored and choreographed to efficiently and effectively create psychological safety and trust amongst participants and to energize and inspire rather than drain. This is not a passive learning webinar where people turn off their cameras and tune in while they are checking and responding to their emails. This is a community-building event that also opens minds and hearts. We do this through guided personal reflection\, small group work\, and large group debriefs. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\nDevelop an understanding of how trauma can show up in the international education environment.\nDefine the Window of Tolerance and articulate its impact on themselves and their workplace.\nIdentify and use strategies for self-awareness and self-regulation.\nBegin to identify how to hold space for others who have experienced trauma.\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nAUDIENCE\nThis online workshop is meant for supervisors\, managers\, mentors\, employees and/or volunteers in international education. They will gain a deeper understanding of how trauma can show up in the international education environment and how to effectively lead with greater compassion and empathy for themselves and their teams. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row text_align= »center »][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nTRAINING SCHEDULE & DELIVERY\nThis virtual workshop is a stand-alone session\, with the view of launching an extended leadership webinar cohort in the Fall of 2023. This is a live\, interactive online workshop. Please note that the session on April 4th will NOT be recorded\, and thus attendance at this live session is required. \nParticipants will log onto Zoom and should have access to a desktop\, laptop or tablet and be stationary for the duration of the event. There will be small group breakout sessions and large group debriefings\, and the session will be interactive. A certificate of participation from MT Consulting will be awarded to all who attend. \nNo pre/during/post training readings\, assignments or assessments are required. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row text_align= »center »][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \n\n\n\nWelcome and introduction\n1:00 pm – 1:05 pm\n\n\n\nHow is trauma showing up in the workplace? \n\nWhat is trauma?\nTypes of trauma responses: flight\, fight\, freeze\, fawn\n\n\n1:05 pm – 1:45 pm\n\n\n\nWindow of Tolerance \n\nHyperaroused state\nHypoaroused state\nWindow of Tolerance\n\n\n1:45 pm – 2:15 pm\n\n\nSelf Awareness and Regulation\n2:15 pm – 2:45 pm\n\n\nQ&A and discussion\n2:45 pm – 3:15 pm\n\n\nConcluding remarks\n3:15 pm – 3:30 pm\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nPRESENTER\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row class= »facilitator-row »][vc_column width= »1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width= »3/4″][vc_column_text] \nSky Mclaughlin\, PhD\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Principal & Co-Founder[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]MT Consulting Group[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sky chose a career in diversity\, equity and inclusion long before the terminology was mainstream in Canadian workplaces. SUMMARY:Tout sur les plans d'études : Ce qu'ils sont\, comment déterminer les documents justificatifs pertinents et comment IRCC les évalue dans le cadre d'une demande initiale de permis d'études.
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nDate limite d’inscription : 18 avril\nCette formation est ouverte à tous. The facilitators' approach of presenting factual information paired with sharing personal stories helped to capture their diverse audience. Reflection exercises not only encouraged participants to examine themselves and racism\, but they also prompted open discussions among participants. Highly recommended for anyone and everyone wanting to start taking steps against racism.”- Carolyn Moi\, Instructor\, Vancouver Community College“As a white\, settler woman with significant privilege\, I knew that I had a lot to learn about racism in Canada and what I could do about it. Participating in this well-designed and delivered training exceeded my expectations over and over! Not only did I learn so much about racism in Canada\, past and present\, I also learned from the presenters and participants about how these experiences have impacted them so significantly. In the training we learned and practiced effective skills to respond to witnessing or experiencing racist encounters. I will no longer be a bystander\, wishing I had the words or confidence to act when I see racism in any form. I can now stand-up and speak-out to address the issue at the time or when it is safe to do so. We must all make the decision and take action to stop racism and the Anti-Racism Response Training program provides the practical skills and confidence to do so!”- Mary Catherine Williams\, Executive Director\, Volunteer Campbell River[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nFACILITATORS\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row class= »facilitator-row »][vc_column column_padding= »custom-padding » column_custompadding= »0px 50px 20px 0px !important » width= »1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding= »custom-padding » column_custompadding= »0px 50px 20px 0px !important » width= »3/4″][vc_column_text] \nThanh Tazumi\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]A.R.T. SUMMARY:Are You What You Measure? Developing Measures for International Mobility – An Experiential Workshop
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text]Join the ‘Measures’ working group within the Education Abroad Professional Learning Community (EA-PLC) as they share their combined experiences about all things data. Consider this as a gift of time to dust off your data and measures hat and play in a workshop sandbox. The desire is to immerse ourselves as practitioners and scholars in a pan-Canadian conversation on data in international mobility: what data we collect\, why we collect it\, and how we even start making sense of what data to begin with. \nThrough exercises\, we’ll explore scoping\, scalability and sustainability of data so that one doesn’t lose oneself in things that don’t directly matter to the significant question. Our desire is to facilitate an opportunity for skills development in using data effectively\, leveraging the value of persuasive\, evidence-based arguments\, and taking informed risks. \nWe look forward to exploring the measures world together! \nWebinar Agenda\n\n\n\n1:00 – 1:05\nWelcome and introduction\n\n\n1:05 – 1:15\nReview of best practices and use cases\n\n\n1:15 – 1:20\nReflection: YOUR data journey\n\n\n1:20 – 1:40\nWorkshop and small gr0up activity\n\n\n1:40 – 1:55\nLarge group discussion\n\n\n1:45 – 2:00\nQ&A and wrap-up\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nPresenters\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row class= »facilitator-row »][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nColin Kutchyera\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Analyst\, Lecturer and Ph.D. Student[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Colin is a Ph.D. student in Educational Leadership and Policy\, focusing on international education.
