Wolfe\, & Sanchit Mittal\, uses a witness-centered approach to disrupting racism.  This Canadian-based training is designed to be relevant to the audience and encourages participants to shift from being frozen or silent bystanders to becoming active witnesses. This online workshop is highly interactive and offers experiential activities to develop and strengthen active witnessing skills.  In a safe and supported online forum\, participants will practice how they can respond to disrupt racism and build a safer and more inclusive community. Facilitator[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Thanh Tazumi (she/her/hers) and her family immigrated to Canada as refugees in 1984. She worked for a multicultural organization for 10 years\, coordinating anti-racism\, diversity\, and organizational change projects. Thanh coordinated the first anti-racism walk in Campbell River\, in 1997 and formed a committee to continue this annual event until 2006. She has co-facilitated workshops on intercultural communication\, equity & inclusion\, and Anti- racism Response Training. Recently she and her daughter developed and delivered an anti-Asian racism workshop to audiences across Canada. Thanh also worked with marginalized youth and families for 15 years. She is grateful to live on the traditional territory of the Wei Wai Kum\, We Wai Kai\, and the E’iksan-K’omoks peoples. She is aware of the history of racism in Canada and many of its impacts on Indigenous and other racialized peoples. Wolfe (she/her/hers) is a mixed European settler Canadian\, originally from Saskatchewan\, who is grateful to reside on the unceded traditional territory of the E’iksan and K’ómoks Peoples. As a teen\, Naomi was a member of an anti-racism youth group in Nashville\, Tennessee\, during the desegregation of schools through crosstown bussing. After 10 years in the USA and 10 years in Guatemala\, she moved back to Canada\, and eventually to Vancouver Island. During nearly 30 years as ESL Faculty at North Island College – including 10 years as Human Rights and International Solidarity Rep. – and through her work with the local Immigrant Welcome Centre\, Naomi gained a deep understanding of the barriers faced by many in her community. She began designing and facilitating intercultural training in the mid-90’s and became an Anti-Racism Response (A.R.T.) facilitator in 2002. Naomi facilitates A.R.T.\, intercultural communication\, Theatre for Living\, and Compassionate Listening (TCLP) workshops and has presented at conferences in Canada and internationally. Facilitator[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sanchit Mittal (he/him/his) came to Canada as an international student; he holds two Master’s degrees and has diverse experience working with various marginalized communities\, including LGBTQ2+ and refugees. With over eight years of experience in various Indian and Canadian organizations\, living as an uninvited guest on the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat\, the Seneca\, and the Mississaugas of the Credit peoples\, Sanchit deeply values Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion (EDI)\, and is passionate about Truth and Reconciliation and Social Justice work\, including Anti-Racism. Sanchit has co-facilitated many workshops including LGBTQ2+ inclusion\, Communications in Intercultural classrooms\, Microaggressions\, and Allyship. Sanchit has worked in Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) International Education and served as the Vice President for SIETAR BC. She has a keen interest in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion which informed her foray into a Ph.D. in Development Communication where she focused on Social Justice Advocacy on social media. She has worked with advocacy organizations that work with marginalized groups especially around intercultural communication\, equity\, diversity\, and inclusion. She currently works with a not-for-profit that provides professional settlement services and builds welcoming and inclusive communities while promoting Antiracism. In her role\, she works collaboratively with other organizations to initiate projects that ensure newcomers feel included\, welcome and safe in the community. After 10 years in the USA and 10 years in Guatemala\, she moved back to Canada and eventually to Vancouver Island. During nearly 30 years as ESL Faculty at North Island College – including 10 years as Human Rights and International Solidarity Rep. – and through her work with the local Immigrant Welcome Centre\, Naomi gained a deep understanding of the barriers faced by many in her community. In Christine’s previous career as a chef\, she had the opportunity to live and work abroad in several countries before joining George Brown College as a faculty member in 2004. In 2012\, Christine transitioned into the academic chair position leading the Chef School at the college. One of the first directives implemented was to significantly increase the number of global opportunities for their students. During her time leading the Chef School\, Christine and her team developed two new degrees and a new international post-graduate program and offered numerous short-term study-abroad opportunities to many countries\, including Peru\, India\, Thailand\, France\, Spain\, China and Italy. In 2020\, Christine was given the opportunity to work on an international project as part of a secondment before transitioning into the then newly developed role of Director of Global Partnerships within the Global Partnerships and Education Division. A graduate of Guelph’s MBA in Sustainable Commerce\, Christine now leads the implementation of global partnership work in collaboration with all divisions at the college. Global education doesn’t stop within her academic role however\, in 2019\, Christine and her family took a month-long trip to Hong Kong\, Thailand and Vietnam with the sole purpose of exposing their children to new cultures\, cuisines and experiences. Consider this as a gift of time to dust off your data and measures hat and play in a workshop sandbox. The desire is to immerse ourselves as practitioners and scholars in a pan-Canadian conversation on data in international mobility: what data we collect\, why we collect it\, and how we even start making sense of what data to begin with. \nThrough exercises\, we’ll explore scoping\, scalability and sustainability of data so that one doesn’t lose oneself in things that don’t directly matter to the significant question. SUMMARY:The Immigration Journey of Spouses and Dependent Children of International Students: Eligibility\, Application\, Challenges and Options
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: April 15\, 2024\n[vc_row][vc_column width= »1/1″][vc_column_text] \nOverview:\nApplications for dependents of international students are one of the most complex temporary residence applications in the RISIA scope of practice and ones with the highest refusal rate. In this webinar\, we will analyze the different options available in the legislation for dependents of international students\, the challenges they face and how to determine which option is best for whom. We will look at who is eligible to apply for a C42 and the options for those who are not. \nWe will discuss which documents and what information should be included in a template application and how to adapt this template to the personal circumstances of each individual/family. Through several ATIPs and Jurisprudence cases\, we will try to determine where Visa Officers focus their attention while reviewing these applications and how this can guide the advice we can provide to our students. We will also discuss the procedure for extending the stay during the main applicant’s studies and after graduation as well as the options for a spouse of a graduate to come to Canada for the first time after the main applicant has graduated. Hundreds and hundreds of institutions and agents have been affected\, and thousands of prospective students are having their visas rejected or rethinking their study plans – or both. \nBut the shock needs to give way to strategic thinking. It isn’t time to hunker down and wait it out. It’s time to acknowledge that the operating environment has changed—whether we like it or not—and realize that there are opportunities as well as challenges. \nThis session will cover the following relevant themes: \n\nRefining your branding and positioning. Conçu pour enrichir vos compétences et votre expertise\, cet atelier vous permettra de mieux comprendre les nuances de la législation éducative et migratoire pertinente à votre pratique. À la fin de l’atelier\, une portion mises en situation permettra de mettre en pratique les notions apprises. \nObjectifs d’apprentissage\n\nAnalyser les droits des demandeur.se.s d’asile en matière d’éducation : Obtenez une vue d’ensemble des droits auxquels les demandeur.eu.s d’asile ont accès lorsqu’ils/elles cherchent à s’inscrire dans des établissements d’enseignement au Canada\, ainsi que des conditions spécifiques à remplir.\nÉclairer les obligations et exigences : Examinez les obligations légales et administratives que les demandeur.se.s d’asile doivent respecter pour accéder aux programmes éducatifs\, y compris les exigences relatives à leur statut migratoire et les démarches à suivre.\nNaviguer dans le cadre réglementaire (LIPR et RIPR): Familiarisez-vous avec le cadre réglementaire régissant l’éducation des demandeur.se.s d’asile au Canada.\nÉtudier des cas concrets : Analysez des études de cas pratiques pour illustrer les défis rencontrés par les demandeur.se.s d’asile dans le système éducatif canadien\, et discutez des solutions et stratégies pour les aider efficacement.\nÉchange des bonnes pratiques : Participez à des discussions collaboratives sur les meilleures pratiques pour conseiller vos client.e.s demandeur.se.s d’asile sur les opportunités éducatives et les processus à suivre.\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nConsulter les autres ateliers-causeries que le BCEI vous proposera avant la fin de l’année de déclaration des activités de FPC:\n2 juin – Pratique éthique et études de cas sur le Code de déontologie \n\n\n16 juin – Démystifier l’examen médical d’immigration \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nInstructeurs\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row class= »facilitator-row »][vc_column width= »1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width= »3/4″][vc_column_text] \nTatiana Gomez\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Avocate\, Spécialiste en immigration[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Service aux étudiants internationaux[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Université Concordia[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Tatiana Gomez est une avocate spécialisée en droit de l’immigration et des réfugiés qui a travaillé en pratique privée de 2009 à 2021. En 2021\, elle s’est jointe au Bureau des étudiants internationaux de l’Université Concordia. Elle a enseigné dans le cadre du programme de consultation en immigration du Collège Vanier de 2011 à 2015.Elle a également enseigné dans le cadre du programme de certificat en immigration de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique de 2015 à 2021. Actuellement\, elle enseigne dans le Programme d’études sur l’immigration et les étudiants internationaux (PEIEI) du BCEI depuis 2022. Il est chef de l’équipe du soutien aux étudiants internationaux de l’UQAM. Depuis 2022\, il collabore et enseigne pour le programme d’études sur l’immigration et les étudiants internationaux (PEIEI) du BCEI. Cette expérience lui permet de rester à l’affût des changements dans le domaine de l’immigration pour les étudiants internationaux.
