International Students and Working in Canada

This webinar will provide a brief introduction of the latest Study Permit Program Delivery Instructions (PDI) updates and an overview of the various work permit options available to international students. In particular, the presenters will focus on the new PDIs for the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) and its implications for international students as well as how advisors can help students understand their options under this new process. Common and specific scenarios will also be introduced with a discussion around the support advisors can provide in these circumstances.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the various work permit options and the corresponding requirements for international students
  • Understand and be able to explain implications of the new PGWP program delivery instructions to students applying within Canada versus applying outside Canada
  • Support students in addressing work permit related issues as they arise

Presenters

Lubna Ahmad
International Student Specialist/ Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant
University of Alberta, International Student Services  

Before completing her Master of Education degree and becoming an International Student Advisor with the University of Alberta in 2009, Lubna Ahmad worked as a teacher and educator in both Canada and the UAE for over 16 years. Lubna has extensive experience in student advising and program management. Since becoming a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant in 2014, Lubna has taken on the role of Immigration Team Lead. Her responsibilities include updating campus stakeholders with relevant immigration changes, reporting on immigration implications of various campus initiatives as they pertain to international students and providing recommendations to departments in the development of current and new academic programs to ensure alignment with relevant immigration regulations.

Nora Lambrecht
International Student Specialist/ Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant

University of Alberta, International Student Services  

Nora Lambrecht joined University of Alberta International, as an International Student Specialist in 2012 and became a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant in 2014. Most of her career has been in Student Services in post-secondary institutions in China. Nora is fluent in English, Farsi and Mandarin. Nora is not only active in providing immigration support to international students at the UofA, but also involved in program management, student support and advocacy, intercultural training and development, and involved in various cross campus collaboration networks in raising awareness to many student health and wellness issues.
