Graeme C. Clark was educated in French and English and attended the universities of Toronto and Oxford prior to joining the Canadian Foreign Service in 1989. He has held various positions at headquarter, including: Director of Mexico and North America; Director of Media Relations; and Director General and then Acting Assistant Deputy Minister of Human Resources. He was also Legislative Assistant to two Ministers of Foreign Affairs (1993-1995) and to the Prime Minister of Canada (1995-1997). Abroad he began his career as Second Secretary and Vice-Consul in San José, Costa Rica (with cross-accreditation to Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama); served as Ambassador to Peru and Bolivia (1997-2001); as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (2006-2010); and as Minister, Deputy Head of Mission in France (2014-2019). He was awarded the Orden del Sol del Peru and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal.

Jesús López Macedo is an economist with master degrees in public policy and business administration. He has over 15 years of experience working in the design, implementation, monitoring and impact evaluation of education, human capital and poverty alleviation programs at the national level reporting directly to top government officials. He spent 7 years working in different positions at headquarters of international organizations such as The World Bank, the Pan-American Health Organization and the UNICEF in the areas of communication for health emergencies and vaccination. Currently, he is Academic General Director at the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES), where he previously served as General Director of Strategic Partnerships.

Karen Dalkie

Karen Dalkie joined Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) in 1998 and over the past two decades she has spearheaded and implemented a variety of projects and initiatives across the globe. In addition to providing strategic-level oversight to CBIE’s implementation of projects funded by Global Affairs Canada as well as foreign clients, Karen is also responsible for developing new partnership and development initiatives for the organization with a range of international and Canadian partners across government, academia and civil society. She is also actively engaged in deepening CBIE’s relations with member institutions, particularly through leading CBIE’s International Collaboration mission series which provides unique opportunities for members to explore and pursue educational partnerships with countries across the world.

Thomas Buntru

Originally from Germany, he studied English and Physical Education at the University of Tübingen (Germany) and, as a grantee of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), at the State University of New York at Buffalo (USA), he completed the coursework for the Master’s in Humanities at the State University of New York at Buffalo, combining studies in Teaching English as a Second Language with German.

He is a certified ESL instructor by the Intensive English Language Institute at SUNY Buffalo and, in Mexico, by the Centro Anglo-Americano de Idiomas. He also  completed the Master in Education at Universidad de Monterrey. He holds certificates in international education from the University of Minnesota and in strategic planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been a member of the Mexican Association for International Education (AMPEI) since 1997 and participated on its board of directors from 2000 to 2013. From 2009 to 2011 he served as the president of AMPEI. In 2015 he was awarded the Premio AMPEI in recognition of his contributions to the internationalization of higher education in Mexico. He is also an active member of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), of NAFSA, and of the European Association for International Education.

Emmanuel Carrillo

Emmanuel Carrillo Martínez is the President of Universidad Tecnológica El Retoño (UTR), the first public bilingual University in Mexico, located in the state of Aguascalientes. He is also the representative of the Government of Aguascalientes in Mexico City, and has served in Partido Acción Nacional, and as an advisor of the Presidency of Cámara de Diputados and Senado de la República. Emmanuel has a degree in Law from the Universidad Panamericana, where he is currently pursuing a degree in Philosophy. Emmanuel has practiced law in a number of different law firms, and is a founder of the SOLEÉ law firm. His areas of speciality include administrative processes in industrial intellectual property and copyright, image advice and international politics.

Tatjana Brkic

Applied Business Research and Social Innovation Faculty

Red River College

Tatjana Brkic is a Chair of Square Metre for Peace, Rotary Peace Builder Committee from Manitoba. She works as an economics professor and a leader in applied business research in social innovation at Red River College, one of the largest polytechnic institutes in Canada. Tatjana also acts as an entrepreneurship coach in MBA program at HEC Paris, UNEP consultant and a strategist behind the Square Metre for Peace. Her passion is finding ways to profitably implement social innovation in business and community in order to transform the society on a global scale. Tatjana’s experience includes developing a business intelligence unit at Manitoba Telecom, creating a global knowledge network about sustainability in business at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and ergonomics work at Volkswagen. She holds an MBA from Dalhousie University and MSc from University of Belgrade.

In this project Tatjana acts as a Rotary Square Metre for Peace volunteer sharing her time and skills to foster international collaboration in time of crisis.

Dr. Pedro Márquez

Vice-President Research and International

Royal Roads University

Dr. Márquez is the Vice-President Research and International at Royal Roads University and professor of Strategic Management and International Business. Born in Campeche, Mexico, he obtained his undergraduate degree in Commerce at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico and both a master’s degree in Political Science and doctorate degree in Business and Political Science at the University of Calgary in Canada.

Márquez returned to Mexico as dean and department head at the Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) business school in Mexico City where he managed a custom-designed executive education program for CEMEX, delivered through a partnership between ITESM, Stanford University and INSEAD.

In 2007 he joined Royal Roads University as dean of the Faculty of Management and was appointed Vice-President in 2015. Pedro has co-authored book chapters and journal articles on NAFTA, focusing on ideas around founder centrality, comparative attitudes towards business ethical dilemmas and teaching entrepreneurship. His research is focused on corporate accountability, Latin American politics and business, Mexico’s business environment and NAFTA. Márquez has served in multiple boards including the West Shore Chamber of Commerce, South Island Prosperity Project, Vancouver Island Economic Alliance and currently the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

David Julien

Inter-American Organization of Higher Education (OUI-IOHE)

David Julien currently acts as Executive Director of the Inter-American Organization For Higher Education (OUI-IOHE) and Executive Director of the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE).

He owns a Doctorate and a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Sherbrooke and a Bachelor’s degree from University of Laval. He has taken courses in leadership and management at Harvard University and McGill University.

He has accumulated 20 years of management experience in three distinct organizations including the IOHE, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and UNESCO where he has been responsible for developing inter-governmental partnerships and different capacity building programs.

He has taught at the Confucius Institute in Montreal, University of Sherbrooke, Marie-Victorin College and Kaifeng University (China). He has also offered training seminars in a various Latin American universities.

Carol Zachs

Simon Fraser University

Carol Zachs serves as Director of Global Engagement at Simon Fraser University and has worked in the field of international education for over 15 years.  Prior to joining SFU, Carol oversaw the study and research abroad program at UBC where she was responsible for strategic development of institutional partnerships and co-curricular intercultural learning programs. She has worked abroad in Denmark and volunteered for WUSC/Uniterra in Ghana. She holds a Masters of Education from UBC with a focus on globalization and adult learning.
