2017 Excellence Awards

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are pleased to call for nominations for CBIE’s 2017 Excellence Awards to be presented at our 51st Conference in November in Halifax.

Designed to honour excellence in the field of international education at different levels and in a range of specialties, the award categories refer to CBIE’s four pillars: EXPERTISE. KNOWLEDGE. OPPORTUNITY. LEADERSHIP. We hope that you and your institution will take this opportunity to recognize individuals and institutions for their many contributions to CBIE and to Canada’s success in international education.

Nomination Deadline:
Thursday, June 5 at 11:59PM Eastern Time

Nominations may be submitted by individual members of a CBIE member institutions or a group of member institutions, CBIE associate or institutional members, and official partners that have a Memorandum of Understanding with CBIE.

  • Nominations are not accepted for current members of the Board of Directors
  • Former Board members may be nominated
  • Only online nominations will be accepted
  • Nominators must start and complete the nomination in one session. The nomination browser page will time out after three hours. Please read questions to prepare in advance
  • CBIE reserves the right to refrain from giving an award in any of the categories if a sufficient number of nominees are not received and to change the category of a nomination, as it deems appropriate. Award winners will be honoured at CBIE’s annual conference in Halifax, November 19-22, 2017.

Award Criteria

CBIE Founders Award

Awarded to an individual whose contributions to and support for international education is recognized and highly valued. This outstanding individual personifies CBIE’s central value proposition: “Expertise. Knowledge. Opportunity. Leadership”. This Award bestows Honorary Membership.

NOTE: This Award is typically made by the Board of Directors. Nominations are not accepted for this Award. However the Board is interested in hearing from members who wish to suggest a possible recipient.

Criteria:           

  • Highly influential;
  • Has played a significant role in raising the profile of international education;
  • Contribution to international education is substantial, and has made an impact on Canada and/or other parts of the world;
  • Not necessarily from a CBIE member institution;
  • Not necessarily Canadian.

CBIE Member Emeritus

Designation of an individual to recognize long-term service and support for CBIE as they retire from the field. This Award bestows Honorary Membership.

  • Provided longstanding and unstinting voluntary service to CBIE through Board membership, task force contributions, Professional Learning Community leadership, professional development activities, or project implementation;
  • Or provided similar service in international education at the national level in some other capacity;
  • An enthusiastic supporter and advocate of CBIE’s mission, mandate, and activities;
  • Service has occurred over a minimum of 10 years;
  • Designation upon retirement from the field (or within 12 months of retirement).
  • May be offered posthumously.

CBIE President’s Award (new)

Awarded to a team or individual who has demonstrated innovation and excellence in design, planning, implementation and management of high quality endeavours in support of learning abroad and outbound mobility.

  • An individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in internationalizing Canadian education and/or advancing the international education profession at the national or international level;
  • Impact on internationalization goes beyond the home institution or organization, involves and motivates other individuals and institutions;
  • Demonstrates creativity with available resources or in finding new resources;
  • Occupies a leadership role such as department or faculty head, program or student services director;
  • Evidence of sustained leadership with a minimum of 10 years in the field, at mid-career or later;
  • Normally not the CEO (unless he or she has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in international education);
  • Not necessarily Canadian.

CBIE Catalyst Award

Awarded to an individual or group for bringing cutting-edge knowledge to the field of international education.

At the discretion of the Board of Directors, this award may be offered without a formal nomination.

  • An individual or group who have produced leading-edge research on a topical issue in international education that informs practice;
  • Research must be of outstanding quality;
  • Not necessarily from a CBIE member institution;
  • Must be from a Canadian institution.

CBIE Board of Directors Leadership Award (new)

Awarded to and individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the field of international education

  • Institution-wide (or school district wide) commitment to outbound mobility and learning abroad in academic, service and community engagement endeavours of the institution;
  • Evidence of planning and ongoing assessment of impact of activities and initiatives;
  • Evidence of innovation and positive change in students, staff, administration, faculty;
  • Illustrates a forward-thinking vision of the potential of outbound mobility and learning abroad;
  • Demonstrates creativity with available resources;
  • Demonstrates that innovation has translated into a sustainable opportunity;
  • Must be a CBIE member institution.

CBIE North Star Award

Awarded to a new professional who has shown extraordinary promise in the field of international education.

  • Although relatively new to the field the individual has shown leadership, commitment and high ethical standards in their role in international education;
  • Led or aided in the leading of new initiatives in international education at his/her institution or in professional organizations;
  • Generally given to someone with seven (7) years of experience or less;
  • Must be at a CBIE member institution.

CBIE New World Award

Awarded to a Canadian student or group of students in order to recognize those who contribute in a positive way to internationalization of their campus community.

  • Has/Have made a noteworthy contribution to the internationalization of campus life; OR has spearheaded a new initiative or demonstrated exceptional leadership of ongoing international initiatives;
  • Demonstrates behaviour/attitude that resonates with good global citizenship and building a better world;
  • Combines leadership skills with strong academic performance;
  • Taking a full-time course of study in Canada in a program of at least one academic year in length;
  • Current student at a CBIE member institution.

CBIE Elizabeth Paterson Award

Awarded to an international student or group of students in order to recognize those who contribute in a positive way to the internationalization.

  • Has/Have made a noteworthy contribution to the internationalization of campus life; OR has spearheaded a new initiative or demonstrated exceptional leadership of ongoing international initiatives;
  • Demonstrates behaviour/attitude that resonates with good global citizenship and building a better world;
  • Combines leadership skills with strong academic performance;
  • Current student at a CBIE member institution;
  • Taking a full-time course of study in Canada.
