Can Canadian universities accommodate students with special needs (individuals with impaired vision or mobility for example)?
Most Canadian universities have a dedicated office for students, faculty and staff with accessibility issues. They ensure that all buildings are accessible and that students with mobility issues are assisted in getting around campus; and they provide a variety of other services such as note-taking, exam preparation assistance, etc. Check out university websites for details on barrier-free campuses and accessibility resources.
Can I bring my family?
You can bring your family but you will be responsible for their visas and for issues related to accommodation, transportation, possibility of employment, etc. No additional scholarship funds will be provided to cover family members’ needs. Make sure you inquire about these matters well in advance of the start of your program.
I have special dietary requirements. Are university cafeterias or meal plans taking the needs of people like me into consideration?
Canadian universities are familiar with the different dietary needs of students and most of them offer a wide selection of meals. Check out the website of your university to see what options they provide.
I am looking for a place to live. Where can I go for assistance?
Canadian institutions offer support and information for students requiring off-campus housing. Some institutions have databases with rental listings that are geared specifically to students to facilitate their accommodation search.
What is off-campus accommodation?
Off-campus accommodation is housing provided by a third party other than the university.
What is on-campus accommodation?
On-campus accommodation is university-managed housing usually located on the university campus or, at times, off campus. Some of these rooms may need to be shared with one or more students.
Is it difficult to be granted on-campus accommodation?
It can be difficult to secure as demand is very high. Some universities do not have as many residence facilities as others. Should they be unable to accommodate you on campus, their housing offices will assist you in finding off-campus accommodation.
Following the end of my year abroad, can I stay in Canada to travel or work?
