Chantal Hébert est chroniqueuse aux affaires nationales au quotidien Toronto Star et chroniqueuse invitée à L’Actualité. Elle participe régulièrement à diverses émissions d’information à la radio et à la télévision y compris le panel politique hebdomadaire At Issue dans le cadre de The National, le téléjournal de la CBC de même que les émissions Les coulisses du pouvoir et C’est pas trop tôt à l’antenne de Radio-Canada.

En journalisme depuis 1975, elle a occupé successivement des postes à la télévision régionale et à la radio nationale de Radio-Canada à Toronto et à la colline parlementaire pour le Devoir et La Presse. Chantal Hébert est diplômée du collège universitaire Glendon de l’Université York. Elle est « Senior Fellow » au collège Massey de l’Université de Toronto et détient des doctorats honorifiques des universités Bishop’s, Concordia, York et Western. Elle est également officier de l’Ordre du Canada. En 2006 elle a reçu le prix d’excellence en journalisme et politique publique Hyman Solomon et le Pinnacle Achievement Bryden Award de l’Université York.

REMOVING BARRIERS TO MOBILITY FROM A CENTRAL AND FACULTY PERSPECTIVE

Canadian institutions have been challenged to increase their international mobility. In this session, we will highlight a few of the barriers to student mobility; curriculum, financial constraints, institutional and faculty priorities, student awareness and communications and quality control. Participants will be provided with tools and examples to minimize or remove these barriers, through existing best practices, to ensure a more successful pathway to student mobility.

STEM IN IRELAND – OPPORTUNITIES IN EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT

Study abroad at all levels offers incredible experiential opportunities for students that translate directly to greatly improved employability, especially in STEM careers. Ireland is an exceptional case study in this regard, with an excellent higher education system and thriving computer science, biotech, and financial industries. This session will examine educational programs, opportunities for internships or employment at home or in Ireland, and pathways for students to take advantage of them.

TRANSITIONING TO LIFE IN CANADA BEFORE YOU GET HERE

This session looks at transforming orientation through massive open online courses (MOOCs). What are we trying to accomplish with international student orientations? Student feedback informed the decision at Vancouver Island University to move away from static orientation presentations where students needed to absorb as much information as possible from presenters. Instead, relevant information in the form of a MOOC or online course is made available to students before their arrival on  D2L.

Two presentations in this session focus on projects involving partnerships between Academics Without Borders & East African universities to help them in building research capacity. The second builds research capacity among nursing faculty at Aga Khan University. Both involve Canadian volunteer academics & thus illustrate a way for internationalizing Canadian higher education.

CROSSING THE RIVER BY FEELING THE STONES: INTERCULTURAL CAPACITY BUILDING FOR STUDENTS

The concept of intercultural competence is gaining value amongst undergraduate university students, yet only 11% of domestic students claim an international student as a friend.  This workshop will explore lessons learned from a course that partnered the Human Rights Human Diversity BA program, English Language program, Community Service Learning Office, and International Office, and resulted in students with heightened self awareness and respect for their international counterparts.

Internationalization and indigenization are dual mandates for many Canadian institutions.  While there may appear to be some synergies, there are also profound differences. While many international educators are passionate about intercultural learning, some scholars have suggested that internationalization lacks an end goal or does not explicitly align with equity and social justice agendas.  How can we learn to be authentic allies while still being advocates for internationalization?

PREPARING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOR LIFE IN CANADA

In this session we will discuss how international programs can help students prepare for life and studies in Canada. We often underestimate the transition our students undergo – from giving up everything familiar in their home countries to starting from scratch in a new country, in a foreign language. Pre-arrival assistance varies from pre-testing students for their language skills, determining how much ESL support they need, to educating them about homestay/residence, and academic requirements. This session will concentrate on two pathways: preparing students (predominantly at the K-12 level) for life in Canada, and transitioning students from high school to post-secondary studies in Canada.

Germany has not only been singled out as “best performer” for internationalization in a 2016 study by the British Council, it is also among the top destinations for Canadian students and researchers. This concurrent session presents opportunities for student exchanges and partnerships at selected German universities, and invites participants from Canada to connect with representatives of these institutions. The session includes an overview of funding opportunities to support partnerships and mobility between Germany and Canada.

FROM MILD TO SPICY: EXPLORING THE FLAVOURS AND COMPLEXITY OF INDIAN PARTNERSHIPS

Strategic partnerships in India come with their own set of challenges, the foremost being identification of appropriate partners.  The college system where public and private colleges are affiliated to state universities can make assessing best-fit partners a time-consuming process.  This presentation introduces an assessment framework to evaluate Indian institutions for collaboration.  Algonquin College, active in India, will then provide a case study describing its strategic approach.

This session presents a provincial collaboration to develop and deliver a high school program that provides pathways to develop students’ intercultural capacities and global engagement.  Four school districts across the province participated in a pilot professional development program to support teachers to develop and deliver robust global and intercultural learning outcomes.  These processes and the results will be discussed.

Pathways programs accounted for around 30% of all international undergraduate student entries into Canadian universities in 2015 – highlighting their important and growing role.  This session introduces the results of the  2017 ICG Canadian Pathways Report which includes benchmarking of more than 85 individual pathways programs, two of which will be showcased as best practice case studies.

HIRING STUDENTS FROM INTERNATIONAL PATHWAYS: BRITISH COLUMBIA CO-OP EMPLOYER PERSPECTIVE

The ACE-BC Research Committee engaged in a collaborative research project to learn more about employers’ perspectives regarding hiring PSE students who have come from international pathways (refugees, new Canadians, visa students, etc.). The study utilized a unique qualitative methodology called Q wherein employers were asked to sort and rank a range of 38 statements that reflected a range of perceptions related to the research question.

BUILDING MOBILITY FROM VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO PHD, COLLEGE TO UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY

Two public institutions in Ontario – a research intensive university and college – have developed a partnership focused on college to university mobility for international students, with a particular focus on undergraduate mobility and student success.  The partnership allows international students to move seamlessly between all disciplines, from diploma programs to graduate level education.  As well  students at the university can seek remediation at the college to fast track to readmission.

CBIE has launched a national campaign to increase the number of Canadian students who study abroad. In response to this, a smartphone App has been developed in collaboration between the University of Guelph, Guard.me and Vital English. The App provides students with online support and a range of tools at their fingertips. The first of its kind, the App supports the students on their path, from leaving Canada, to arriving at their study destination and on location.

When international students are admitted to a Canadian college or university they celebrate for a little while, then the stress starts building about the journey that they will soon embark upon. The unreachable Canadian Consulate, the confusing IRCC website, the complicated online application system, the long processing time and sometimes the unjustified refusals are just a few of what make the study permit application a miserable experience for students. How can we facilitate this experience?

What began as a modest cohort-based BBA program has blossomed into a multi-faceted campus operation. While offshore program delivery certainly demonstrates one type of pathway, this is a model that has its challenges, particularly in a country as complex as India. 30 YEARS OF ERASMUS+: HOW CAN CANADIAN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS BENEFIT FROM THE ERASMUS+ PROGRAM?

The Erasmus+ European student mobility program turns 30 in 2017. What started off as a mobility scheme for around 3,000 higher education students in 1987 has evolved into a program which, between 2014-2020, will provide a variety of opportunities to four million students and staff in the fields of education, training, youth and sport. This session presents experiences with the Erasmus+ program in Germany and Norway and describes the impact which the program’s components have had on student mobility in these countries. It will also present opportunities for Canadian Higher Education Institutions to participate in the program’s partner country stream.

RAISING OUR STANDARDS OF PRACTICE: ETHICS AND RECIPROCITY IN NORTH-SOUTH STUDENT MOBILITY EXPERIENCES

Universities and colleges across Canada are engaging in a national conversation that seeks to promote global engagement and increase the number of students participating in international learning opportunities. But, to what end and at what cost? This session will seek to highlight some of the contemporary issues affecting the conceptualization and implementation of study abroad programs, including: balancing the legal imperatives related to risk with its perceived educational and transformational value; entry points for articulating, integrating and evaluating learning outcomes in study abroad programs; the challenges and opportunities that come with retrofitting best practices onto existing programs; how to contextualize the ideals of global citizenship and solidarity within study abroad models; and, the implications of being too risk averse when choosing safe study abroad destinations in an increasingly uncertain and turbulent world.
